Emotion and Transformation: Changing Individuals, Couples and Communities

In this workshop we will explore the use of emotion in bringing about positive change in the lives of our psychotherapy clients. Our emotional experience can also be cultivated in our life as citizens through the development of what may be called “affect freedom”. Over the course of the workshop we can see how a confluence between psychotherapy, developmental and affect sciences, and political psychology have worked separately and are beginning to work together to bring about a rise in the psychological consciousness of our culture. Particular focus will be given to a review of affect-focused psychotherapy: These practices that can be used in both short-term therapy and long-term analysis to help individuals, couples, and families learn to use their affective experience to create emotionally intimate connections, which is contributing to an emerging psychological consciousness in our culture.

Peter was raised in a liberal political family, has been trained as a clinical and political psychologist, and has been practicing psychotherapy for 20 years. He has recently published his research with progressive leaders in a book entitled: Awakening Our Faith in the Future: The Advent of Psychological Liberalism (Routledge, 2008), and is a contributing author to Tikkun magazine.
